Inmagic News: DB/TextWorks and WebPublisher PRO 15 Released

Inmagic has released version 15 of DB/TextWorks, WebPublisher PRO and DB/Text for SQL. Just a few of the many improvements in this release include:

  • New Field Type: Rich Text. The Rich Text field type permits you to change fonts (font name, size, color, bolding, italics, etc.) within a single field, align text, create bulleted lists, and so on.
  • New Field Type: Call Number. When records are sorted by a field using the Call Number field type, Call Numbers are sorted in the correct order.
  • Email Enhancements: Email dialogue more closely resembles sending mail from an email client, and includes fields for additional message text and a signature.
  • Limits increased on the number of fields, characters in field names, linked textbases, forms, query screens, and many other features.
  • Substitution Lists: Additional Field Types now support Substitution Lists: Call Number, Code, Image, Link, and Number.
  • Support for SQL Server 2012 (for DB/Text for SQL).

Customers with a current subscription to the Inmagic maintenance program can download and upgrade to this version now. Do note that it involves changes to database structures, so all software and databases should be upgraded at once.

Read more about this release in this Andornot blog post, and contact us for assistance with upgrading and to learn how to take advantage of these new features.

Recent Andornot Projects to Inspire You

Burnaby Art Gallery Online Collections Now Include Public Art

Burnaby Art GalleryThe Burnaby Art Gallery is a long-time Inmagic user and was one of the first of Inmagic's clients to adopt our Andornot Discovery Interface (AnDI). This innovative tool was used as the basis of a new public search of the BAG's collections, including artworks and books and printed materials in a reading room at the gallery. Features such as spelling corrections and facets, combined with a gallery style layout of art, help researchers, curators at other galleries and the public appreciate the BAG's collections from afar.

Recently the BAG was tasked with cataloguing the many works of art in public settings, such as parks, city streets and local institutions. Over 100 of these works, many of them unique sculptures, have been catalogued, photographed and located by means of a latitude and longitude. This information is all stored in the gallery's Inmagic DB/TextWorks system.

Records for these public art works are now available in the search engine. Click here to view the public art specifically. While viewing a work, a "View in Google Maps" link is available to geolocate the art and help you plan a trip to see it in person.

Our work with the BAG is just one of many examples of innovative uses of the Andornot Discovery Interface to help connect users with diverse collections. Contact us to discuss how your materials could be best searched and presented.

Northern Health Library Services Launches VuFind Discovery Interface

Northern Health VuFindNorthern Health Library Services is a long-time Inmagic DB/TextWorks user, and continues to manage their library collection with this software. Northern Health has just joined a growing number of special libraries and Andornot clients in upgrading the search interface used by patients, the public and health authority staff to a discovery interface.

Northern Health chose the open-source VuFind discovery interface, one of Andornot's recommended systems, for their catalogue. The new system is hosted by Andornot at https://nhalibrary.andornot.com and provides users with an intuitive and productive experience using features such as:

  • fast, relevancy-based keyword search results;
  • spelling corrections and did-you-mean suggestions of alternate terms;
  • links to related resources;
  • faceted browsing to easily narrow down results; and
  • tools for saving and sharing searches and records.

These features connect users with resources quickly and accurately, and provide the type of search experience they are used to from other web applications.

Canada 150 Grants Available

To help commemorate Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, the federal Department of Canadian Heritage has created the Canada 150 Fund: "a funding initiative that aims to promote Canadian values, culture and history, generate national pride and bring citizens together."

Funding is available in the form of grants or contributions for projects that support a number of objectives, including the following ones of particular interest to libraries, archives and museums:

  • Exhibits
  • Celebratory or commemorative activities and events
  • Learning materials and activities

One particular opportunity we see for libraries, archives and museums is to seek funding to start or continue digitizing historic documents, photographs and audio-visual recordings, then make them available in an online virtual exhibit.

We've helped several clients with similar project, such as the United Farmers of Alberta, the College of Registered Nurses of B.C. and the Ontario Jewish Archives.

More information on the program is available here. Contact us to help plan a project that might earn you valuable funding, and help celebrate this country's 150th anniversary!
